Surigao City Pilot School Family Fun Run: A Rainy Day of Unity, Fitness, and Fundraising

Despite the rainy weather, the Surigao City Pilot School Family Fun Run was a resounding success, with an impressive 3,000 participants braving the early morning drizzle for a worthy cause. The event, held on Sunday, March 2, kicked off at 4 a.m. in front of the Surigao Provincial Gym, bringing together SCPS pupils, their families, teachers, school administrators, and local community members to support the school’s development projects. The race route took participants through the scenic streets of Surigao City, with various hydration and entertainment stations set up along the way to keep spirits high. Motivational cheers from volunteers further fueled the runners, joggers, and walkers on their journey.

SCPS Learners Explore the Wonders of Space and Science

Excited students filled the halls of Surigao City Pilot School (SCPS) on February 26-27, 2025, as they embarked on a thrilling educational adventure. Learners from Kindergarten to Grade 6 had the unique opportunity to explore the mysteries of the universe through a Planetarium, 3D Film Viewing, and an Interactive Exhibit, all brought by Jhayron Events Management Services.

A Blessed Visit: Santo Niño de Cebu brings faith and hope to Surigao City Pilot School

Surigao City Pilot School was filled with joyous devotion on February 21, 2025, as the revered image of the Santo Niño de Cebu graced its grounds. This special visit, part of the “Hubileo sa mga Kabataan kauban si Señor Santo Niño”, marked a significant event in the school’s history and aligned with the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year, “Pilgrims of Hope.”

Virgen Dela Paz Y Buen Viaje Parish, designated as one of the pilgrim churches for this year’s Hubileo, was honored to receive a special grace from the Basilica del Santo Niño, including a replica of the original image of Santo Niño. In line with this spiritual journey, the image was brought to SCPS, where it was welcomed with great devotion and festivity.

6 PILOTians pass prestigious PSHS National Competitive Exam

Six students from Surigao City Pilot School (SCPS) have earned a coveted spot at the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) after passing the National Competitive Examination (NCE) for School Year 2025-2026. The examination, held on November 16, 2024, at Caraga Regional Science High School (CRSHS), identified outstanding students for admission to one of the country’s top science high schools. Gabriel Glen U. Babatogon, Arslan Jullian V. Copino, Ambrielle June Correos, Renae Layze D. Jabagat, Brent Sean E. Silao, and Luke Asher P. Roy are among those who successfully qualified from SCPS.

Among the schools in the Surigao City Division, SCPS had the largest number of passers, further solidifying its reputation for academic excellence. Their success reflects not only their hard work and dedication but also the unwavering support of their teachers and mentors at SCPS.

Winning Streak Continues: SCPS reigns supreme at DSPC 2024

Surigao City Pilot School (SCPS) once again showcased its excellence in campus journalism, emerging as the Over-All Champion in the Elementary Level at the Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) 2024, held from December 2 to 4 at St. Paul University Surigao. This consecutive victory highlights the school's dedication to developing skilled young writers and broadcasters. Under the leadership of the School Principal Mr. Donald T. Arquiza and Assistant to the Principal Mrs. Norlyn G. Palima, SCPS students delivered an outstanding performance, securing 8 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze in an individual categories; 3 golds and 1 silver in group events. Their success is a testament to their hard work, determination, and passion for journalism.

Road to Recovery: Classroom repairs in full swing at Surigao City Pilot School Post-Typhoon Odette

Twenty-three classrooms at Surigao City Pilot School are currently undergoing repairs after sustaining significant damage during Typhoon Odette. The project, being carried out by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), is funded by the Department of Education (DepEd) with a budget allocation of approximately ₱18 million. The repairs, expected to be completed by December 2024, aim to restore learning spaces that have been unusable since the typhoon struck. With the ongoing construction, the school has implemented blended learning for Grade 5 and Grade 6 pupils, combining face-to-face and modular learning to address the shortage of functional classrooms. School Principal lighted the challenges posed by the situation.

"It’s been 2 years that the classrooms were left hanging, and we’ve had to adapt to ensure learning continuity for our pupils. The blended learning approach allows us to maximize available spaces while keeping pupils engaged in their education." Arquiza said. Teachers and pupils have embraced the temporary measures, although some parents have expressed concerns about the impact of blended learning on the quality of education. The DPWH repair work involves structural reinforcements, roofing replacements, and upgrading classroom interiors to withstand future extreme weather events.

Empowering Voices: SCPS introduces Special Program in Journalism

Surigao City Pilot School took a bold step in shaping the next generation of journalists by launching its Special Program in Journalism for Grade 4 learners this school year 2024-2025 to nurture young journalists and ensuring its legacy as the home of champions in journalism. Surigao City Pilot School was making waves in education with the launch of its highly anticipated Special Program in Journalism. Opening its doors to Grade 4 learners, the program was designed to foster the skills of future journalists. This initiative built on SCPS's proud reputation for excellence in journalism, offering students an opportunity to hone their writing, reporting, and digital media skills from a young age. The new program, which officially began this school year, welcomed students who passed a rigorous qualifying exam held on July 20, 2024.

Rise Above the Rest: PILOTians conquer 30 schools in Science and Math challenge

Surigao City Pilot School won the most recent Provincial Science and Mathematics Contest in an incredible demonstration of skill and tenacity held at St. Paul University Surigao on October 25, 2024. Schools from all throughout the province competed for top honors in a variety of categories during the competition and demonstrated the intellectual prowess of their participating pupils. A total of 30 participating schools were present and competing for the competition. The pupil-participants from SCPS prepared for the competition for months under the watchful eye of their committed teacher- coaches Jimmy B. Lunario Jr., and Almie Rhoa Rodela, including the Science and Math teachers of the school. The preparation process was demanding but fruitful, involving everything from intense review sessions to practical experiments and practice tests. Teachers used cutting-edge teaching techniques to help their pupils develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
